Skynopy secured €15M ($17.6M) in seed funding to accelerate the expansion of its ground station network, and attempt to meet growing demand for data downlink services.

The round was led by a mix of space- and tech-focused VC firms, including Alven, Expansion Venture Capital, Omnes Capital, Heartcore Capital, and CNES via the SpaceFounders program.

Blink and you’ll miss it: This latest funding round was closed in less than a month, and brings the company’s total funding to ~€18M (~$21.1M) since it was founded less than 18 months ago.

In that time, Skynopy has also created a network of over 15 ground stations and counting. It plans to increase its footprint to 100+ in the coming years to offer real-time connectivity around the globe.

“The first thing [satellite operators] want is fresher data. They want the ability to download that data as fast as possible, as frequently as possible,” cofounder and CEO Pierre Bertrand told Payload. “The end goal is to scale the network as fast as possible, with the maximum amount of ground stations.”

Skynopy’s tech covers transmission over S-, X-, and Ka-bands, and gives satellite operators the ability to download two to three times the amount of data than they would with other ground station services, according to Bertrand.

The goal is to offer more to companies with high download needs, such as those using hyperspectral EO or SAR sats, while companies with lower download needs can cut their costs in half.

Skynopy’s tech also aims to shorten the amount of time it takes between downloading data, and sending it either to the client or the cloud. With sat revisit times already under 20 minutes, Skynopy says its tech is especially beneficial for defense and climatological EO sats that depend on speedy dissemination of data for rapid response.

Build and buy: Skynopy has been able to scale rapidly through a partnership with AWS, in which Skynopy plugged in its technical infrastructure on top of existing antennas at a dozen AWS ground stations around the world.

Skynopy plans to use the new funds to build two ground stations of their own in French overseas territories—one each in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon near Canada’s Newfoundland and Labrador, and Réunion in the Mascarene Islands east of Madagascar.

The new ground stations aim to increase France’s homegrown data download capabilities, but will also seek to benefit the company’s growing global customer base.
