Arcfield Acquires Orion Space Solutions

Arcfield, a company providing space mission support and technology to government customers, has scooped up Orion Space Solutions to build out its core capabilities and expand what it’s able to offer DoD customers.

“Arcfield has a long history of delivering innovative solutions across the space domain, and we believe the acquisition of Orion enhances Arcfield’s ability to provide next-generation space technologies in support of DOD and IC missions,” Kevin Kelly, Arcfield chairman and CEO, said in a release.

Arcfield 101: Though Arcfield technically formed in 2021, bits and pieces of the company have been kicking around under different ownership—including Lockheed Martin from 1995 to 2010—for more than 60 years. The company focuses exclusively on the mission needs of US and Canadian government customers, providing systems engineering, integration, cybersecurity, and testing support, among other things.

The company employs 1400+ people at 16 offices in the US and Canada.

Enter Orion: Orion, a Colorado-based company founded in 2015, puts science at the heart of the engineering work it does. Its work spans from building instrumentation and cubesats to data science and AI.

The partnership will allow both the Arcfield and Orion teams to take on more government contracts and deepen their expertise. The Orion leadership team is also taking on roles within the Arcfield structure: Orion CEO Geoff Crowley will be the new Arcfield chief scientist, and Orion itself will be Arcfield’s fourth business sector.

This is Arcfield’s second acquisition this year, after buying Strategic Technology Consulting, LLC, a digital engineering firm, in August.
