Hot off a European hyperspectral partnership, Canadian EO firm Galaxia is reaching even higher with new funding.
The Halifax, Nova Scotia-based company announced on Thursday that it had raised $4.5M CAD ($3.25M) to continue its mission to make EO sats that can process info in orbit at the speeds required for today’s decision-makers. Quebec’s Amiral Ventures and Invest Nova Scotia co-led the round.
Galaxia, which partnered last week with Belgium’s Simera Sense to bring hyperspectral wavelengths into Galaxia’s sat systems, says the cash infusion will cover a to-do list spanning deploying new sats, expanding hybrid space networking, and expanding sovereign space capabilities. All of that will require curated space information, which also forms part of Canada’s new defense strategy.
From sats to sovereignty: Galaxia was founded in 2020, while CEO Arad Gharagozli was a student at Dalhousie University in Halifax. As a side quest, he and other students developed a nanosat mission—Low Orbit Reconnaissance and Imagery Satellite—that flew to space in 2022. He followed up the feat at Galaxia in 2025, launching the CSA-supported MÖBIUS-1 for EO using a software-defined satellite platform.
Galaxia’s focus is on EO security, as it aims to create “intelligent satellites” hosting edge-compute platforms for real-time space insights. Other Canadian companies are in this field as well: Toronto, Ontario’s Kepler Communications announced in August that its new optical-data-relay sat network is operational using “resilient connectivity, onboard computing, and hosted payloads.”
Allyships: Canada has been prioritizing sovereign launch and space capabilities in recent months, in step with the rest of the world, and Galaxia has been a part of it. In February, the company received ~$219,000 CAD (~$158,000) under an Atlantic Canada-focused part of the Government of Canada’s Regional Defence Investment Initiative. This tranche was for stuff like hiring, upgrading a sat-manufacturing facility, and seeking new export customers.
