Spain-based FOSSA Systems is expanding internationally for the first time with the opening of a new subsidiary in Portugal, the company announced Tuesday.

The new location will focus on R&D&I (that’s research and development and innovation) in fields including space, aeronautics, telecom, and satellite connectivity.

“With this first delegation outside of Spain we seek to increase our international presence and serve new markets,” CEO and cofounder Julián Fernández said in a statement. “We have worked with several Portuguese entities, and we see this new R&D&I center as a great opportunity to take advantage of the potential that Portugal offers.”

FOSSA 101: Fernández and Vicente González cofounded the satellite-based IoT startup in 2020 with a HQ in Spain. The company employs 25 people, which is expected to double by 2025, according to a press release.

The company closed a funding round for an undisclosed amount in November to help it build its satellite constellation.

Portuguese space sector: The Portuguese Space Agency lists 40+ space companies in the domestic space ecosystem, including D-Orbit, an in-space transportation company, and Valispace, which works to streamline engineering processes for complex space systems. Its space agency, which was established in 2019, is pursuing a goal to grow the domestic space sector by a factor of 10, with a focus on EO, space debris, and space traffic management.
