Getting out of the atmosphere requires conforming to a long list of local regulations and international treaties that can be complex, cumbersome, and vague. Luckily for the team at Charter Space, Nicolas Moraitis is on top of it.
As a regulatory affairs officer at Charter, the 25-year-old is working to demystify space law to help the firm’s clients understand the regulations that apply to them.
Mover and shaker: Moraitis isn’t just an armchair expert—he’s actively involved in shaping space policy and promoting the sustainable use of space through his work as the general counsel of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), an organization that acts as a voice for the next generation of space professionals.
He was instrumental in formulating SGAC’s stance on space sustainability, which he presented to the UN’s Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COUPOS).
“The decisions we make today will have a profound impact on the next generation, so it’s crucial that their voices are heard. My goal is to help empower young people and ensure they have a seat at the table when it comes to critical issues,” Moraitis told Payload.
In the strategy, he called for international collaboration to address the problem of orbital debris and suggested that COUPOS form a youth advisory board that could weigh in on future actions that will impact the younger generation.
For over three years, he’s also been the national point of contact for the SGAC in Greece, where he conducts outreach and events to promote opportunities in the space industry to students.
